Corsair Conquistador
(Limited Edition)
Dr. David Longworth, co-signer of this lithograph and uncle of the artist, flew his first combat mission off the aircraft carrier, USS Bon Homme Richard (CV-31) on June 24, 1952. On this day, after delivering all four of his 250lbs. bombs on target, LTJG Longworth pulled his Corsair into the vertical. While concentrating on the target, he nearly made a fatal mistake. In the few seconds of his dive and bomb release he lost track of the mountain, which had become obscured by the thick clouds of smoke. Pulling back on the stick and adding full combat power, he prayed that the sky above was empty.
